From going undercover dressed as a nun or pole dancer to speaking directly to child victims as young as four, the journalist has doggedly collected evidence of a rampant sex slave trade in Mexico. BOGOTÁ, Colombia – Journalist and activist Lydia Cacho, who left Mexico in August after receiving death threats for her work, hopes to return soon to her country at the conclusion of an investigation into the threats made against her.

“My idea is to return in the short term,” she said. “My country needs good journalism and I want to be there.”

Cacho was accompanied by a security detail in the Colombian capital, where she was promoting her latest book Esclavas del Poder (Slaves of Power), which chronicles transnational groups that traffic women for sexual exploitation.

Cacho, 49, alleges the threats she’s received are from a criminal organization, possibly a drug cartel.

“Whoever did it is someone dangerous – many mobsters are mad at me,” said Cacho, who founded a shelter in Cancún that houses women who are in danger.

Cacho first received threats in 2005, when she published Los Demonios del Edén (The Demons of Eden), which exposed a pedophile ring involving businessmen and politicians in Cancún.

The American Commission on Human Rights and Amnesty International have said it’s paramount to provide security for Cacho, considering more than 80 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000.
