A major earthquake struck Chiapas, Mexico today. The quake marked one of the strongest temblors to strike the country in several weeks.
Mexico earthquakes this summer have been frequent. But few have been centered on-land, in a populated region. Today’s quake was on-land; but it had a substantial depth.
The quake erupted at 11 am PST today. The quake, however, had a substantial depth - roughly one hundred fifty miles below the earth’s surface.
USGS puts the quake five miles from the Chiapas town of Venustiano Carranza. Shaking could be felt nine miles south in Teopisca. USGS also puts the quake twenty-seven miles southeast of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The quake was roughly one hundred seventy miles from Guatemala City, officials say.
Most Mexican quakes this summer have been striking near Baja. In June, a 3.3 magnitude quake erupted in the region. The USGS reported that the quake was only thirty-six miles southwest of San Luis, Arizona and one hundred miles east of Tijuana.
Days later, more temblors struck roughly fourteen miles from Baja California’s Guadalupe Victoria. The quakes were thirty-five miles from the Sonora town of San Luis Río Colorado and roughly one hundred miles from Tijuana.
