Set in Tapachula, Mexico, this documentary follows the stories of 54 children, survivors of poverty, trauma and abuse, and their journey to Mision Mexico.
Since the premiere in February 2010 ‘Somewhere Near Tapachula’ has played in Australia, Mexico, America, Canada, Hawaii, South Africa, India and Ireland. It has won three film awards: National Film Festival Talented Youth, for best documentary; Humantiarian Spirit Award at the California Surf Festival and Audience Choice Award at the Yallingup Surf Film Festival.
The film focuses on the unique surf community that Alan and Pam have pioneered in Tapachula, a coastal city with no other surfers in the area. The children get to go surfing every weekend, which has had an amazing impact on them, providing an escape from their unimaginable pasts.
“Surfing is something special, it’s not just a sport, it’s part of my life. I feel like I don’t need anything more, I don’t need to take drugs, there is nothing better than surfing” says Jose, one of the film’s young grommets, also a former street kid who was neglected and beaten by his prostitute mother and got heavily involved with drugs and gang violence.
This movie will challenge you with the important things in life, and open your eyes to the power of riding waves, whether you are a surfer or not.
