The two U.S. agents shot on Friday, August 24, along with a Mexican navy captain, near Tres Marias town in Morelos, were affiliated with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), reports stated today.
An article published in the La Jornada newspaper revealed that sources close to the investigation also said the assault occurred after certain members of the Federal Police saw the occupants of the U.S. diplomatic vehicle up close.
According to reports, it was a direct hit and if there were no casualties, it was because the Toyota van had the highest possible armored plating, resisting the more than 30 bullets fired at it, said the newspaper.
On the same day, the U.S. embassy charged that there had been an ambush, while the Federal Police said it had been a misunderstanding.
The Public Prosecutor's Office said initially that the U.S. citizens, who were supposed to supervise shooting courses at the Marine Corps training camp, were traveling on a rough dirt road known as El Capulin, in the Mexican state of Xalatlaco.
