With the threat of the storm Isaac to the U.S. city of New Orleans, Louisiana, the Caravan for Peace led by Mexican poet Javier Sicilia changed its route and is now in Jackson, Mississippi.

This is the 17th city visited by the Caravan, of the 26 cities on the tour schedule until September 12, when it will arrive in Washington.

According to the official website, during the stay in Houston, Sicilia, whose son was murdered by organized crime in 2011, symbolically destroyed a military assault weapon acquired in a market where they are sold legally.

The group, consisting of a hundred families of people who died or disappeared during the war against drug trafficking begun by the government of President Felipe Calderon in 2006, is making a call to the conscience of U.S. citizens regarding the scourge.

Says Sicilia, "If we fail to stop the epidemic of violence caused by assault weapons and murderers who use them, we will continue to live in hell."
