St Lawrence to become national pavilion for Biennale

The government of Mexico is to restore the 9th-century Venetian church of St Lawrence in exchange for the right to manage it as a cultural space and use it as its national pavilion in the biennial international art and architecture exhibitions until 2020.

On Monday the agreement with Venice city council led to the special opening of the church for the display of projects by Mexican architects engaged in designing spaces for contemporary arts and culture.

The exhibition, 'Culture under Construction', came two days ahead of the inauguration in Venice of the 13th international architecture exhibition directed by British architect David Chipperfield and entitled 'Common Ground'.

The church of St Lawrence, one of the oldest religious sites in the lagoon city and allegedly the burial place of the Italian explorer and merchant Marco Polo, has undergone several transformations over the centuries and is currently closed to the public.
