MEXICO CITY – The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) stated that it will launch the You Choose to Eat Well campaign, through which the agency will distribute alternative menus that substitute eggs and provide healthy options that are free of saturated fats and cholesterol.

At a press conference, Profeco official Bernardo Altamirano said that this information is mainly geared toward families that have a monthly income of about 7,000 pesos, with the hopes that families can learn about other highly nutritional and economically accessible foods.

“We are proposing smart eating options based on seasonal produce that are also reasonably priced … our (alternative) menus integrate seasonal produce and also include information from the Secretariat of Health.”

The diet options, he said, which consist of fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes and fish, can be found on the program’s website, www.consumidor.gob.mx, which will be updated every 15 days with the latest price information on products.

This information will be spread through a national awareness campaign involving the Profeco’s various offices across the country, consumer organizations, the Health Secretariat (SSA), the Mexico Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Government Employees Social Security Institute (ISSSTE), the Public Education Secretariat (SEP) and social networks, as well as businesses and state governments, he said.

He said that the website is intended to be a tool of education, and that he hopes that it will create a new culture of food consumption, providing food alternatives equipping Mexican families to deal with fluctuating food prices.

On another note, Bernardo Altamirano said that the results of 1,300 investigations into businesses for not clearly displaying prices, not respecting advertised costs and incorrectly displaying prices will be made public as soon as they are completed.
