MEXICO CITY – The Progressive Movement (MP) said Tuesday that although they will wait for the Federal Electoral Tribunal’s (TEPJF) ruling on their petition to throw out the presidential election to decide what actions they will take, a “social explosion” cannot be ruled out.
The left broadly supports Progressive Movement candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who lost the election by nearly 7 percentage points. López Obrador also ran for president in 2006, when Felipe Calderón beat him by a much narrower margin, and the leftist’s followers staged massive protests that shut down Reforma avenue for nearly six months.
The national leaders of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and the Labor Party (PT), Jesús Zambrano and Alberto Anaya, and Progressive Movement representative Juan Miguel Castro Rendón held a meeting with high-ranking judges of the electoral authority.
After the meeting, the politicians held a press conference, stating that they told TEPJF judges that it is important to fully consider all of the evidence of Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) vote-buying that the left presented to the authority. They also proposed postponing the deadline for the ruling.
Zambrano said that they asked the judges not the rush through the proceedings in a few days “without deeply and exhaustively examining our allegations.”
Without calling it a threat, he said that if the TEPJF declares the presidential election valid, the judges would have to explain in detail why the left’s allegations were not enough to throw out the process.
