At the inauguration for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)’s first plenary meeting in Chihuahua, PRI National President Pedro Joaquín Coldwell and PRI Senate Coordinator Emilio Gamboa Patrón agreed to build the “new face of the country” based on reforms that benefit all Mexicans and not only interest groups.
The two PRI senators said that voters are “electoral migrants” that trusted in the party to see “if the PRI was capable of responding to voters.”
Coldwell and Gamboa Patrón said that Enrique Peña Nieto showed the political maturity and responsibility necessary to confront the most pressing national problems. Peña Nieto, they said, has the ability to make strategic decisions and to reach out to the Mexican people, which shows that he will make a great president.
The PRI national president said that he recognized the economic stability that Mexico has achieved in the past few years, but noted that there is still a long way to go in terms of development.
“We have gotten to the point that if benefits are not socialized, if they do not reach the masses, they are therefore useless. If the PRI returned to power, it was because voters are unsatisfied with what they have. They are electoral migrants, and they have bestowed on us their trust, to see if we are capable of responding to voters’ needs. Mexicans want to work, they want food, quality education, health care, a healthy environment, comfortable cities, security. The agenda that Enrique Peña Nieto has proposed contains all the right elements to achieve these goals.”
Gamboa Patrón said that the PRI’s participation in this new phase of Mexican history is significant. “We understand the responsibility that comes with being the Senate majority, and we are convinced that to pass reforms we will have to work with other political parties.
“We will stress political reforms, and we will be frank, honest and open with other parliamentary groups who present initiatives, and the PRI will discuss, analyze and approve bills when appropriate. I am convinced that the other parties are also worried about this, but I am sure that they are working on passing reforms so that we can get the country out of the state it is in … there are many long-standing issues, but I think that Mexico is in a good position to change,” he said.
