The city of Chihuahua, Mexico now prohibits live performing songs that “promote violence against women, promote their denigration, discrimination, marginalization or exclusion,” an official said last week.
Sharing a Facebook video about the new rule, Mayor Marco Bonilla explained that 70% of all 911 calls in the city report domestic violence.
“Domestic violence, and specifically violence against women, has reached levels that we can consider a pandemic. Imagine that 7 out of every 10 calls we receive in the 911 unfortunately are related to family violence and very particularly against women,” translated captions of his statement read.
“That, of course, we can not allow and we can not allow this to normalize,” Bonilla said.
Violators of the new restriction can face fines ranging from $39,000 to $71,000 USD. The funds collected from these fines will go to the Instituto Municipal de Mujeres, a government gender equality and women’s refuge program.
The rule comes as Mexico continues to deal with soaring rates of women-discriminate murders. In 2022, AP reported that 10 girls die daily in Mexico. Progress against this violence has been slow, officials admit, as government attempts to slow the killings have not stemmed the tide.
In 2011, the Mexican state of Sinaloa banned the performances of “narcocorridos,” a genre of music celebrating drug trafficking, and threatened to revoke liquor licenses of venues in violation. Songs in this genre describe bloody battles between traffickers, police and rival gangs.
