Mexico not only has a high rate of forced labor among the countries of the Americas, it also bought from abroad 9.2 billion dollars of products made through “modern slavery” in 2022.
The Global Slavery Index 2023, prepared by the human rights group Walk Free, details that what the country imports the most are electronics from China, such as laptops, computers and mobile phones, worth 5.5 thousand millions of dollars.
Also from the Asian country it imports clothing for 1.5 billion dollars.
According to the index, Mexico ranks 13th among the countries in the Americas with the highest rate of forced labor.
The prevalence of so-called modern slavery is 6.6 percent in the country, per thousand inhabitants, above nations like the United States, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, and Costa Rica.
In total, he reveals, there are some 850,000 people in the country in this situation.
This year Mexico barely published an agreement to restrict the importation of products made with forced labor.
“The United States is the country that has taken the most measures to confront slavery in the Americas, followed by Canada, Argentina and Uruguay. While Cuba, Suriname and Venezuela have taken the least action.
“Of the five G20 countries in the region (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and the US), Brazil, Canada, and the United States have taken steps to address modern slavery in supply chains,” the report says.
The document states that the G20 countries account for more than half of all people living in conditions of exploitation (50 million) by importing more than 468 billion dollars of goods produced with forced labor.
