President Touts Mexican Growth Despite Earthquakes BERNAMA

Mexico registered economic growth of 1.7 per cent in the third quarter, despite the effects of two quakes in September, China's Xinhua news agency reported, citing President Enrique Pena Nieto this week.

In a speech when he opened a new terminal at the Cancun International Airport, Pena Nieto said that Mexico is seeing an ever greater economic energy.

"If there has been a small drop which allows us to feel in the economy the effects of the quakes felt last September, we can also see that the economy is growing," said the president, adding that growth has been constant and sustained since his government took office.

He noted that domestic consumption is growing, the demands for services is increasing among Mexican families and the economy is "set for the development and prosperity of our society."

Pena Nieto said that tourism is "crucial" to his government, which promotes the country's beauty and cultural sites. The creation of more airports and the greater arrival of tourists "are a reflection of economic growth, according to the president.

Cancun International Airport is the second most important airport in the country, after that of Mexico City. The new terminal covers over 68,000 square meters and is planned to increase the airport's capacity to over nine million passengers a year.
