Citizens in Mexico Say Trump’s Border Wall Prototypes ’Humiliate’ Them Will Ricciardella - Independent Journal Review

Steel prototypes, standing 30 feet tall, of President Donald Trump's proposed border wall near the Otay Mesa border crossing, are making Mexican citizens just across the border feel like “pariahs.”

“That's how it looks with things like (the wall): They view us as pariahs. The worst thing is, it's being built by Latinos themselves,” student Paola Gomez, 21, told Reuters, who can hear the noise of the wall's construction from her home. “They need Mexicans and other undocumented people. They save lots of money with us,” Manuela Altamirano, 42.

“Trump constantly does things to humiliate the Mexican people ... These walls are like monsters he created, like a border Frankenstein,” she continued.

A small group of protesters on the Mexican side of the border burned a pinata resembling Trump last weekend, Reuters reports. “We're not enemies,” organizer Sergio Tamay of migrant shelter Angels Without Borders said.

Many Mexican citizens took issue with “Latino labor” building the wall, defining them only by their ethnicity and not by nationality. It's to this idea that the entire immigration debate is being waged, with the legality of immigration or citizenship status almost entirely neglected.

...Others took issue with the noise that construction on the wall was making, as well as the “depressing landscape” the concrete prototypes created, according to Tijuana resident Alexis Franco, 22.

“This is just going to be a nuisance for all of us who live here,”
