After the September (2017) Mexico City earthquake, GEER (Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance) used drones and on-site data collection to study how structures fared. The data will be used to engineer structures that can better withstand earthquakes and help save lives. Kevin Franke, a BYU civil engineering professor, led the GEER team on this September 2017 trip.
BYU uses drones to collect data on-site immediately after an event and the drone footage is then used to model structures to determine why they failed.
The GEER Association coordinates National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsors reconnaissance efforts of geotechnically important extreme events.
