Two Killed in Incident Between Police and Indigenous Protesters in State of Chiapas

Two police officers were killed and 26 were injured, 18 of them with gunshot wounds, in a clash with indigenous people in El Aguaje, San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, the Secretariat of Security and Citizens" Protection reports.

According to the source, the incident took place on Friday, when 450 state and municipal agents tried to unblock the Pan-American Highway that was occupied by members of the aforementioned community.

The law-enforcement agents were attacked with firearms, stones and sticks. The dead victims were Agents Martín Jiménez and Arbey Rosales.

The indigenous people demand authorization to participate in the administration of the tourist resort Grutas de Rancho Nuevo, which is run by the cooperative Prestadores de Servicios Turísticos Grutas de Rancho Nuevo.

The government of Chiapas condemned the incident and assured that authorities had met with the protesters at negotiating tables, but they rejected the proposals and blocked the highway on Thursday.
