Residents Organize Independent Party Ahead of Mexico City 2018 Local Elections Latin American Herald Tribune

Citizens have organized an independent political party to compete in Mexico City’s 2018 local elections, said Xavier Gonzalez Zirion, the group’s leader and a pharmaceutical executive.

The Podemos Juntos CDMX group wants to “build a politics of service for the capital’s residents and not for the political and interest groups that are entrenched in the (local) government,” Gonzalez Zirion said.

The grassroots movement invites all residents to join its cause, Gonzalez Zirion, who plans to run for Mexico City mayor next year, said in a statement.

Ricardo Pascoe, who served as head of the Mexico City borough of Benito Juarez from 1997 to 2000, said action must be taken to end rampant real estate development linked to the close relationship among officials, political parties and crooked developers.

“Today, we have set forth the importance of joining in because together we can do it and we are convinced of this. We all have extensive political experience. We’re not improvising,” Pascoe, who hopes to once again govern Benito Juarez, said.

Podemos Juntos CDMX said it was led by “men from the center, left and right who moved away from the traditional political class.”
