Javier Valdez Càrdenas, a prominent Mexican journalist, was shot and killed near his offices in Sinaloa on May 15, 2017. Protests broke out in Mexico City calling for justice for Valdez following his murder. In 2011, Valdez received CPJ's International Press Freedom Award. (Committee to Protect Journalists)
Family and colleagues of slain Mexican journalist Javier Valdez blockaded the Sinaloa state Attorney General’s Office on Saturday to protest the slow pace of the investigation into the May 15 murder.
Waving banners and placards reading “Justice for Javier,” dozens of demonstrators surrounded the building in Culiacan, the state capital, to prevent employees from entering.
The 50-year-old Valdez, known for his coverage of Mexico’s drug war, was gunned down two months ago in Culiacan while walking near the offices of Riodoce, a newsweekly he helped found.
