Five years ago the bridge connecting Eagle Pass and its sister city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico had to be shut down by the U.S. Border Patrol because of gunfights between armed men and Mexican law enforcement agents.

The night of terror spilled across the main streets of Piedras to homes where families were forced to lay on the floor as explosives and gunfire exploded outside.

Five years later that fight seems to be over.

Five years later, we can drive across to the Rio Grande River to Piedras Negras.

I am very familiar with Piedras Negras, where I spent a lot weekends with college friends who are from here and were studying in San Antonio.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Piedras seems to be thriving.
