Casa Malca (Breton Carasso)

A former estate used by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar while on the run has been converted into a luxury hotel by New York-based art dealer Lio Malca.

The five-star residence in Tulum on Mexico’s Caribbean coast was returned to its original owner in 2003 and bought by Malca in 2012. He has since filled it with art from his private collection.

Malca’s roster of artists includes Andy Warhol, Jean-Michael Basquiat and Keith Haring, and works are frequently rotated between rooms so that returning guests can have a different experience each time.

The property has been transformed from a nine bedroom house to a villa with 35 suites and rooms that are 180m from the beach.

... Rooms can be booked by flushed holidaymakers at Casa Malca with prices starting at $490 a night.
