Update: New Rules at Mexico City Airport Aim to Ease Flight Delays (Reuters)

Five airlines in Mexico were fined this week for a total of 22.4 million pesos (1.24 million U.S. dollars) for charging passengers of their first checked-in luggage, a practice now banned under a new law.

The Mexico government issued the new law on Monday, allowing the fines to be levied on airlines for charging checked-in luggages as well as for late flight departures.

The five punished companies were Mexico's Aeromexico, Interjet, Volaris and VivaAerobus as well as a U.S. airline JetBlue.

The new law states that passengers are allowed to check a piece of luggage weighing up to 25 kg for free on domestic and international flights starting in Mexico.

The law also states that airlines should inform passengers about the reasons for flight delays and cancellations.

For delays between 90 and 120 minutes, the flight companies will have to compensate passengers based on their own policies, while for delays between two and four hours, airlines must provide a discount of 7.5 percent for a future journey to the same destination.

If the flight delays are four and more hours, the companies must reimburse the entire ticket value, offering alternate transportation, as well as accommodation if needed.

The government also announced it will begin similar processes against United Airlines and American Airlines for the same reason.
