The Mexican government has not requested the collaboration of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the alleged illegal tapping of journalists and activists' cell phones.
“There is no knowledge of any request for assistance from the FBI, if there were any, it will proceed under the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters,” said an American diplomatic source from the US embassy in Mexico.
Activists and journalists in Mexico denounced that at least 16 people were victims of espionage by the federal government, after the US newspaper, The New York Times, revealed that the administration of President Enrique Peña Nieto acquired Israeli software, sold only to governments to carry out espionage actions.
