Experts say Mexico's low unemployment rate is deceiving (Wikimedia Commons)

Mexico’s unemployment rate was at 3.5% of the economically active population in May, falling back to the level posted at the start of this year, which corresponds to the lowest unemployment reading since December 2007. In April, the unemployment rate was at 3.6%, while in May 2016 it was at 4.0%.

The unemployment rate refers to the economically active population percentage that did not work even an hour during the survey’s reference week, but expressed willingness to do so and did tried to get a job.

In May, 59.3% of the Mexicans aged 15 or over in the country were economically active (participation rate). This figure is similar to the rate posted in the previous month, after seasonal adjustment.
