The National Council for Preventing Discrimination (Conapred) launched a national campaign to combat prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexual (LGBTI) collectives and recognize the value of inclusion.
With this campaign “is intended to counter ideas that associate homosexuality with a pathology and confuse sexual orientation with gender identity,” the Conapred said in a statement.
It also seeks to celebrate sexual diversity, promote the recognition of rights for all people, and combat existing stigmas and stereotypes towards LGBTI persons.
As part of the initiative, the agency launched an ad that shows a young man introducing his family members, including a single mother, a heterosexual and a homosexual couples, and concludes: “We are all different and we respect each other.”
“Love is greater than differences, an inclusive Mexico includes you,” said the announcement.
To mark the start of the campaign, activists, academics and civil society organizations held a meeting called “Peace Room: Against Homophobia and Inclusion”.
Seven out of ten LGBTI people have felt discriminated in educational institutions, while half of this population claims to have experienced, at least once, harassment or discrimination cases at work, according to a report supported by the Arcoiris Foundation.
