One of the world’s most violent countries is trying to give its people more power to protect themselves.

The state of Nuevo León, Mexico has approved a reform that would provide greater protection of individuals using self-defense.

Congressman Marcos Mendoza Vázquez, in an explanatory statement, said that citizens of Nuevo León have expressed their almost constant fear of falling victim to widespread violence, which has been overwhelming the region for some time. “What concerns our neighbors the most is that they or their relatives could be injured or lose their lives or freedom for defending themselves against someone who breaks into their home or business to commit a crime,” Mendoza said.

Additionally, he said citizens were also worried about how much they were ignoring the laws when acting in self-defense previously. Now, the reform should ease some of that concern.
