Low Income Areas in Mexico to Get Solar Investment Renewables Now

Mexico is aiming to switch to clean energy with wind and solar to make up more than one-third of its electricity sources. (CGTN America)

The Mexican government announced on Monday it will invest MXN 438 million (USD 25.8m/EUR 22.9m) to install more than 10,000 solar systems in rural areas of the country.

That phase of an initiative by the Universal Electric Service Fund will bring clean power 45,000 Mexicans, currently living in energy poverty and in localities were the extension of the distribution network is not viable, said the country's Energy Secretary, Pedro Joaquin Coldwell.

The fund's goal is to bring electricity not only to rural communities, but also to marginalised urban areas far from existing networks, the government pointed out.
