Lately, Mexico navigates in an ecstasy of indignation. Public opinion, dinner table talk are the points of ignition for a more-than-justified spiral of ire, the central axis of which are the most recent cases of corrupt governors.

These cases, discovered by the press or opponents and, thanks to public pressure, partially prosecuted by the Mexican judiciary, have not satisfied the appetite for justice in a society that wants more.

And who's next?

The question, repeated to the point of exhaustion in past months and days, presumes corruption touches the entire political class, without regard for the party the governor belongs to, the amount of the budget handled or the geographic location of his influence. The answer, judging from the already documented cases, makes them right.

As condemned men exhibited naked before their deaths, while a chorus in the Roman coliseum sings their end, Mexican governors begin to be, as never before, under the magnifying glass of those they govern.

Judging by an investigation done by Sin Embargo, the damage to the county by state governments reported just during this administration by the Superior Auditor of the Federation adds up to 258 billion pesos [US$13.6 billion at current exchange rate].

Behind this figure, there are not only economic grievances, but also victims. These cold numbers of financial damage make up the social programs that don't go to those who need them, the security projects whose money is used for other things, the roads built at inflated prices with cheap materials, the projects never carried out.
