US Loses Tuna Trade Battle with Mexico (NewsBeat Social )

The ruling will see trade sanctions worth $163 million actioned immediately, according to Mexico’s economy minister.

The two countries came to loggerheads in a dispute over the tuna fish trade, with allegations the US had discriminated against tuna caught by Mexico.

While a step in the right direction, the sanctions award was only a third of the expected $427 million Mexico had sought via the WTO.

Mexico's complaint dates back to 2008, and focuses on US rules on "dolphin friendly" labelling, which Mexico said unfairly penalises its fishing industry.

US-Mexico trade relations have been under increasing strain since President Trump came into office, following threats of a wall along the 2000-mile border, as well as plans to renovate the NAFTA trade pact which essentially defines commerce between Canada, Mexico and the US.

The tensions over a possible wall between the two nations led to increasingly bitter exchanges between high profile figures on both sides of the argument.
