A ruthless Mexican drug kingpin ends up getting life imprisonment after staring at a prosecution case perched on a mountain of evidence.

That’s what happened earlier this month when a D.C. federal judge permanently put away Alfredo Beltran Leyva, convicted for his leadership in a long-running drug trafficking operation that funneled literally tons of drugs into the country.

It’s also what federal prosecutors hope to repeat in their pending Brooklyn case against Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, a man they call “the most notorious drug trafficker in the world.”

They’re not going to lock down the Sinaloa Cartel leader with name calling alone. To nail Guzman, legal experts say they expect the feds to use the same types of tactics that brought down Beltran Leyva and other drug kingpins through the years.

“This will not be a learning experience for the government. They are well prepared,” said attorney Frank Rubino, the defense lawyer for Manuel Noriega when the former Panamanian dictator was convicted in 1992 of drug smuggling and racketeering.

With so much riding on Guzman’s sought-after scalp, Rubino said prosecutors will "make sure they are perfect.”

The defense, meanwhile, will have to play poker with the hand they've been dealt by prosecutors, said Rubino, who's also represented defendants brought to justice in America for the Mexican narco-wars.
