The Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico released a statement in Desde la fe, the Archdiocese's weekly publication, titled "Treason against the Homeland." It read: "Any company intending to invest in the wall of the fanatic Trump would be immoral, but above all, its shareholders and owners should be considered traitors to the homeland."

The editorial added any border between the nations would push further prejudices and discrimination.

"In practice, signing up for a project that is a serious affront to dignity is shooting yourself in the foot," it continued.

The statement was released following a meeting with steel companies in Mexico last week.

Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo attended the session and claimed the government did not plan to place any restrictions on businesses - but he did warn Mexicans would judge and base future purchasing decisions based on "which brands are loyal to the national identity, and which are not."

He further stated, "I think your prestige will align with your own interests in not participating in the wall."

The Archdiocese claimed Mexican companies had expressed interest in supplying cement, paint, lighting and other materials for the border wall but it remains unclear which or how many companies have stepped forward.
