More than 81,000 undocumented foreigners were detained in Chiapas, in southern Mexico, in 2016, representing 43 percent of the nation's average last year.

According to the Secretariat of Government (SEGOB), migrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were the most affected ones.

Citizens from Afghanistan, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who represent an unprecedented influx of migrants, also entered the country.

SEGOB's Secretary for Southern Border Development and International Cooperation, Arturo Zamora, stated that along the 658-kilometer border between Mexico and Guatemala, there are nine formal steps, 31 informal income points and more than 1,000 pedestrian crossings.

An average of one million crossings is annually reported in such sites.

Due to its strategic position between the United States and Central America, Mexico has been one of the most migratory borders in the world, especially non-regular migrants.
