Mexico City’s mayor plans to decide by the end of the year whether to run for president in 2018, saying his decision will depend on the support of "the people" and the potential for a broad citizens’ movement.

Miguel Angel Mancera, who’s most closely associated with the Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, said he’s open to forming alliances with other parties, particularly the Movimiento Ciudadano and Labor Party, known as PT. He said Mexico needs a government that can deliver progress, warning that one which sews divisions or that rolls back advances will create stagnation. Mancera may make his decision in November, he said.

Mancera’s candidacy would emerge from a "citizen’s movement with a broad proposal, capable of merging several sectors of society," Mancera said Wednesday in an interview in New York on the sidelines of the Women4Climate conference at Columbia University. “Only the citizens will decide. I’m here with the best intentions.”

...A poll published by Mexico City newspaper El Financiero in February showed Mancera trailing several other candidates, with Lopez Obrador receiving 33 percent of voter support, followed by 27 percent for Margarita Zavala of the National Action Party and 20 percent for Miguel Angel Osorio Chong of Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party. Mancera received 10 percent backing in that poll, tied with independent politician Jaime Rodriguez.
