The Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) could support the presidential candidacy of Manuel López Obrador, of the National Regeneration Movement, but the decision is controversial in that group.

The PRD's national leader, Alejandra Barrales, said that the organization would also support the politician, who is now a strong contender for the 2018 presidential elections if PRD militants decide so.

Barrales's statements came a day after the leadership of the so-called Aztec sun party agreed to dismiss Luis Miguel Barbosa as head of the Senate bench for publicly expressing his support for Lopez Obrador.

'As long as it is not allowed for our party, we cannot allow individual decisions to cloud the PRD's position,' he said.

Barbosa is still recognized by the Senate Board of Trustees as coordinator of the PRD bench, but Senator Dolores Padierna was appointed to that position by the party leadership.
