Desperate residents have organized to protect their community after ten of their neighbors were murdered last month for refusing to pay extortion money to the gangs who terrorize the poverty-stricken Central American nation.
Men and women take it in turns to stand guard each night in Peronia, south of Guatemala City, barring entry to strangers.
Some cover their faces with scarves but others risk being targeted for revenge by openly defying the brutal gangs.
Guatemala and neighboring El Salvador and Honduras are in the grip of a refugee crisis as thousands of people have been forced to flee to Mexico to escape the gang terror.
