The Mexican Football Federation is appealing fines levied against it by FIFA for Mexico fans chanting gay slurs during matches. Fans often chant the gay slur ‘puto’ when the opposing goalie kicks the ball. They have expanded use of the slur to other sports, including NFL games when fans will chant it during kicks.

Of course, the Mexico football team has already acknowledged the use of the slur is discriminatory, creating a campaign to fight against it. Now that it’s costing the Football Federation a bunch of dough — and more sanctions could be coming — they want to claim it’s not discriminatory or that they shouldn’t be held accountable for the actions of their fans.

FIFA has often taken action against federations for the discriminatory behavior of their fans, including the emptying of stadiums for some games.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said a decision could be handed down in just weeks.
