The Mexican capital now has its own constitution.

Miguel Angel Mancera, head of Mexico City's government, on Sunday presented the text outlining the rights and liberties of the capital's residents. The document ensures gay rights as well as a woman's right to abortion in the only place in Mexico where the procedure is decriminalized in all cases.

The constitution also calls on public servants to take responsibility for crimes committed while on the job, and allows the mandate of the capital government's chief to be revoked by a vote of at least 10 percent of Mexico City residents.

Mexico City's first constitution was the result of four months of work by local legislators, academics and representatives of various sectors in society.

It takes effect next year.
