Mexicans are among the numerous foreigners being held at airports across the country following President Donald Trump’s highly criticized refugee ban.

According to the Consulate of Mexico in Chicago, travelers flying from Mexico to the city’s O’Hare International Airport have experienced longer-than-normal waits since Trump signed an executive order employing “extreme vetting” from citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.

“We have reports of Mexicans who have been held for more than 12 hours ...We have a case of a family who were held for more than 10 hours and we’re looking into that,” Marcelino Miranda, consul for legal affairs at the Consulate of Mexico in Chicago, said.

While Miranda doesn't believe the Mexicans' long waits and questioning from U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have anything to do with Trump's ban, he notes that those being impacted aren't so certain and are deeply concerned.

“They need to remain calm, but they need to be aware,” he said. “They need to contact the Consulate of Mexico if they feel they are finding mistreatment or an unnecessary stay at the airport.”
