Café Tacvba - FUTURO (Café Tacvba)

Café Tacvba’s first album in five years is due anytime now. All the music they’ve released so far has been quite evocative of the direction the band is taking for this next project. They first shared “Un Par De Lugares,” an experiment in pop sheen that was accompanied by an environmentally conscious video featuring Leila Takeda, the Oaxacan surfer who is Mexico’s national surfing champ.

But the “Futuro” video is a pretty straightforward departure from “Un Par de Lugares,” almost the polar opposite of that single in tone and execution. “Futuro” is sinister but hopeful, full of occult imagery and blacklit visuals with the Tacvbos living out the characters of the illustration that accompanied the release of their single. Caricatures of Donald Trump, Pope Francis, and more dance on a bus-turned-plane in the sky.

On first glance, this is more goth than the Café Tacvba we’re used to. But this is still the band we know and love, and far from becoming a macabre affair, the wackiness of the whole clip only enhances their brand of eccentricity. The clip was filmed in Buenos Aires by director Diego Tucci in collaboration with vocalist Rubén Albarrán.
