Bungling members of drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s feared cartel had to dig a second escape route tunnel for their boss after their first attempt ended up in the wrong cell.
The mistake is estimated to have added an extra million to the cost of springing the Mexican from the high-security Altiplano prison and delayed his bid for freedom by three months.
Only after his engineers, who had travelled to Germany to learn specialist skills in mining, adjusted their bearings did they find the correct location.
El Chapo finally escaped on July 11, 2015, riding away to freedom on a modified motorbike which ran him underground more than a mile along specially constructed rails.
According to Mexican magazine Proceso, after his recapture the billionaire drug lord, told investigators: “It was not complicated. The first time they wanted to get me out they got the cell wrong, but later they corrected and I left.”
...Guzman, 59, faces two extradition bids, one in California for drug distribution and another in Texas on charges that include murder and money laundering.
