Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his sorrow over the death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, at the age of 90, referring to him as an iconic leader of the 20th century and a "friend of Mexico."

Fidel Castro passed away on Friday at 10:29 p.m., his brother, current President Raúl Castro, said in an address on state television late Friday.

Peña Nieto took to Twitter to express his condolences, and followed it with a second message describing the deceased Cuban leader as "a friend of Mexico, who promoted bilateral relations based on respect, dialogue and solidarity."
