Pena Nieto Tires to Calm the Waters While Social Networks Pummel Him El Jefazo - The Fulano Forum

Seeking to calm the citizenry after the victory of Donald Trump in the United States presidential elections, and where the peso had the worst inter-bank exchange rate in history, President Enrique Peña Nieto issued a message from the official residence at Los Pinos, but this had a negative reception on the social networks.

"Starting with this democratic process, a new chapter has been opened in the relationship with Mexico and the United States, which will imply a change, a challenge, but also I have to tell you, a great opportunity," he said before reporters and public servants.

"Mexicans are going to start this era with security and determination, but more importantly, unified. We will continue working with the responsibility and commitment which has always characterized us," said the Mexican president.

But on the social platforms on the internet, citizens thought differently.

"While Peña Nieto appears 'optimistic', the prediction on economic growth was cut, international rating agencies raised risk in the Mexican economy, the peso slid under pressure from the dollar, and analysts are predicting the Bank of Mexico will raise interest rates 50 to 100 basis points under market pressures," said Laura Alicia Martínez González, in the forum for a wide distribution national newspaper.

Others, like Humberto Cuevas Mojica, see reminders of other times, "His speech reminds me of 'I will defend the peso like a dog'.'"

"We are only missing the crocodile tears," said Arturo Berianga, in the same tone, as he alluded to the calls from ex president José López Portillo, in his sixth state of the union, marked by runaway peso devaluations and inflation.

In return, Peña Nieto sees things differently.

"We will employ out creativity and strength, the capacity of our entrepreneurs and our people's talent to open new paths of cooperation and prosperity," he said.

We have inseparable links with American society. The best example is the Mexican community that lives in the United States. These are families which contribute every day to the development of both nations," he said.

"As president of Mexico, I will give all my abilities, body and soul, to watch over the rights, welfare and interests of Mexicans wherever they may be," he added.
