The social, human and economic dimensions of changing climate for the corn farmers in Mexico (World Bank)

Mexico has spent more than 24 billion pesos (about $1.3 billion USD) per year to combat weather changes due to climate change and the figure is increasing.

Expenses are increasing due to the frequency and magnitude of these events, Dr. Francisco Barnes, executive director of the Mario Molina Center (CMM), said.

During the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CMM and the German Research Institute on Climate Change, Barnes said although there have been no human lives lost recently due to this issue, economic losses have been very significant.

About 30 percent of the country's municipalities have been exposed to some degree to these natural disasters, he warned.
