In the chaotic aftermath of Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States, the Mexican spirit seems to be running a little low as well.

Despair can spread like a wild fire, burning all that is good in its wake. So now seems like a good time to reflect on the countless occasions in which Mexico has been an inspiration to the arts.

Here are some songs that remind us how Mexico’s magic has inspired musicians all across the board:

“Mexico” by Incubus

This track from their Morning View album tells the story of a relationship on the rocks.



“M.e.x.i.c.o.” by The Kill:

A short tune, but it’s got enough zip to make you want to party on the beach. It’s also the perfect way to practice for your next Spelling Bee.



“Mexico” by Beck

This song tells the enigmatic story of a McDonald’s employee who is robbed at gunpoint. He then commits a robbery himself so he can go to Mexico… but ends up stuck working at McDonald’s again. Because hey, these things happen, and what is Mexico without a dose of surrealism?



“Mexico” by Cake

After weathering a stormy breakup with an ex-lover, the song’s narrator decides to leave it all behind and cool his heels in Mexico for a while. The song also pokes fun at American ignorance of Cinco de Mayo.
