Two polls conducted by the main newspapers in Mexico show presidential candidate and former first lady Margarita Zavala running first for the July 2018 election.

According to the polls, Zavala would have more than 30 percent of vote if the presidential election were held today.

She is member of the right-wing National Action Party and the wife of former President Felipe, known for leading a U.S.-backed war on drugs in which more than 100,000 people were violently killed.

Zavala, who officially announced her bid last year, is followed by leftist leader and former Mexico City mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with 25 percent.

Lopez Obrador, a two-time presidential candidate, represents his own party called the National Regeneration Movement, or Morena. It is widely speculated that he won the 2006 election but was denied the victory as a result of electoral fraud, he was defeated by Felipe Calderon.

In third place is current Secretary of the Interior Miguel Angel Osorio Chong with 16 percent. He is the only candidate in the poll that has not yet announced his bid, however local press say he will be the chosen one of President Enrique Peña Nieto.
