Like a chameleon, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has adapted to Mexican culture, a move that has enabled it to increase its power over the past 85+ years, journalist Nacho Lozano says.

The PRI is Mexico's hegemonic party, and from its ranks emerged all the country's presidents between 1929 and 2000. Although it did not hold the presidency for the next 12 years, in 2012 it once again took the reins of power.

Lozano and colleague Maria Scherer have coauthored the newly released book "El priista que todos llevamos dentro" (The PRI member inside us all), published by Grijalbo, in which they interview a number of people from Mexico's political, cultural, educational and entertainment spheres.

"In this book, the PRI was a pretext for understanding a part of Mexican culture, the bad habits, the inspirations, the creativity, the abuses, the deeply nauseating things but also the worthwhile things about being Mexican," Lozano told EFE in an interview.

He added that "the PRI ... simply knew how to understand the Mexican culture, for good and for ill, and it systematized it, it adapted to it."
