Hundreds of cab drivers blocked a central Mexico City boulevard with their taxis to protest Uber and other mobile ride-hailing services.

Tensions boiled over at times Wednesday as cab drivers pushed and rocked cars of suspected Uber drivers' cars as they tried to make their way along the boulevard's unblocked side lanes. The pink and white taxicabs surrounded the Independence Monument for hours, snarling downtown traffic.

By early afternoon, authorities had managed to reopen one side of the boulevard.

Led by taxi unions, the protesters say Uber is hurting them financially and is unconstitutional.

Mexico City implemented regulations for Uber and similar services such as Cabify more than a year ago under pressure from cab drivers to even the playing field.
