Supreme Court Rules for Sexual Diversity, But Warns Confrontations Remain Prensa Latina

The Mexican Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) has passed a law in favor of the union between people of the same sex in a controversial move, which is consider by some to be unconstitutional.

Ministers in the First Chamber of the Court have passed three resolutions in New Leon, Chiapas and Hidalgo, which give legal protection to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgenic, transvestite and inter-sexual communities (LGBTTI).

Memebers of these communities argued that the laws of these states, with regards to marriage and cohabitation, were discriminatory.

They also demanded the payment of compensation, as those affected could not get married or exercise cohabitation rights due to the discriminatory laws.

The court decision came, coincidentally, after a demonstration by the LGBTTI community in the capital, which was small compare to the one called by organizations which affirm and defend traditional families.

Several organizers of the LGBTTTI demonstration, including the deputy, Jose Alfonso Suárez, of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), said that although things have changed with regards to respect for sexual diversity in the country, there is still a fear, that the LGBTTTI community will have to confront religious, anti-gay groups.
