Ceremonies in Mexico City today commemorated the 31st anniversary of the devastating earthquake of 1985, but there appears to be a difference of opinion over the quake’s strength, or simply some bad proofreading.

Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera unveiled a plaque this morning in the Plaza de la Solidaridad in memory of a natural disaster that killed at least 5,000 people and injured 30,000 or more.

But how strong was it on the Richter scale? Most reports say it measured 8.1 but there are some that say it was 8.0.

The new plaque, however, states it was much lower, at 7.7. No explanation for the figure was offered but the newspaper Milenio suggested it was a mistake.
