More Than 6,000 People Are Infected with HIV Virus in Playa del Carmen The Yucatan Times

According to Rudolf Geers, president of the civil association “Vida Positiva Playa”, it is estimated that between 6,000 and 10,000 people living in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo are infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-AIDS), although most are not aware of it.

According to statistics issued by “Vida Positiva Playa”, an average citizen of Playa del Carmen has three sexual partners, contributing to spread the HIV virus. Considering the fact that most of the population of this city is between 20 and 30 years old, and are sexually active.

Rudolf Geers stated that, it is estimated that for every person who knows that he or she has the virus, there are between 10 and 20 who do not know they are infected.

The figures from the National Center for Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS (Censida) in Quintana Roo, indicate that 72% of HIV carriers Playa are in advanced stage.

Playa del Carmen is one of the places in Mexico with the highest incidence of cases. “The tests show that between 2 and 3% of the local population has HIV, while Censida says the nationwide average is 0.3%,” Geers said.
