Flooding in the wake of Manuel and Ingrid (Noticias PV)

Three years after a pair of hurricanes inflicted considerable damage on the state of Guerrero, authorities have discovered that a handful of mountain communities have been overlooked in efforts to rebuild.

Wind and rain delivered by Manuel and Ingrid left more than 30,000 homes damaged in the state, according to an official census, but the aid expected by seven communities in the municipalities of Chilpancingo and Leonardo Bravo never made it.

Residents of those communities took their concerns to the city of Chilpancingo this week, blocking access to the state offices of Sedatu, the federal Secretariat of Agrarian Development, by applying chains to the main entrance.

There they delivered the message that despite having been officially counted among communities that sustained storm damage, nothing had ever come of it.

“We have not been relocated, we have not had any houses built...” said a spokesman for residents, claiming they had been abandoned.

Not one family has been relocated, there are not enough houses and many have no electricity, said David Damián García. “People are still living in areas that were ruled uninhabitable.”
