Donald Trump's visit to Mexico may have gotten mixed reviews back in the US, but Mexican news outlets seemed to universally pan the businessman's unexpected appearance.
Many news outlets, including popular Mexico City newspaper La Universal, labeled the Republican presidential nominee a threat to Mexico.
Meanwhile, Universal columnist Mario Melgar Aladid slammed Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for inviting Trump against the wishes of the Mexican people.
"Trump is an enemy to Mexicans. He's worse than a persona non grata. He never should have been welcomed."
Another Universal columnist, Ricardo Raphael, blasted Peña Nieto for the poor timing of the joint press conference, which occurred just hours before Trump doubled down on his hardline immigration stance in a speech in Arizona.
"Why didn't you wait, before hosting him in your house, until the Republican candidate gave his immigration speech? Did you know that's the most discriminatory place for Mexicans? Did it occur to you that if Trump picked Arizona, that he would ignite a fury, demonizing us as the cause for all the United States' problems?"
Mexico City newspaper La Jornada painted Trump's "fleeting appearance" as an embarrassment for Mexico in an article titled, "The day Donald Trump triumphed in Mexico."
